Folklore Fridays- Hag Stones

Have you ever found a Hag stone? These stones have natural occurring holes right through them usually caused by water or wind. Some say they are magical some say they are just different types of rock material and one wears away sooner than the other. What do you think?

I was at the river with my family walking along the river bed. I had my head down looking at the different rocks. Some large and smooth, some small and jagged. I thought to myself, how can 2 rocks be in the same elements and react so differently...fascinating.

I looked up to see where our furry family members were running off too when, I noticed something out of the corner of my eye. Not thinking anything I kept walking, but then I stopped. I just had to go back and see what it was my eyes thought they had seen. I saw a dark rock with a shadowy mark on it. I picked it up thinking I was going to do a quick look and toss it in the river.

Then I saw it. A hole going right through this rock. I washed it off and inspected it to see if it was rock or just hardened sand, clay and pebbles. Nope it was a rock and a Hag stone. And I know so many people are thinking so? I find them all the time. But I don’t. To me finding this stone was exciting. I was told that a hag stone will show you all of nature's secrets, you only need to peer through it. Having heard this story in my younger years and not finding one until now...I was ecstatic.

So obviously, I ran over to tell my husband all about the rock I found and the story behind it. Oh, so many stories behind this stone.

Hag Stones, also known as Witch Stones and Holey Stones are usually found near the ocean or other water sources. They are traditionally thought of to be powerful protective stones. They were worn, carried, hung in homes and on ships for protection. Traditionally used for protection from curses, negative spirits and hexes. They were placed under pillows to ward off nightmares, worn as jewelry for their healing energy and hung in the home as beautiful art work. Old folklore says that if one broke it used its energy to save a live.

Hag stones can be used for cleansing, protection, new beginnings, spiritual connections and opening the third eye. It is also said that if you peer through the hole, the fairy world will reveal itself to you. So, no matter what your journey is, there is a tale or use for this magical stone in everyone’s life.
